Chihaya Station is a joint JR Kyushu and Nishitetsu interchange that grew out of the redevelopment of the former Kashii rail yard. The Nishitetsu side dates back to 15 June 1951 as Nakano Station on what is now the Kaizuka Line. The JR Kyushu side opened on 7 July 2003 as a Kagoshima Main Line stop 71.0 km from Mojikō, and the Nishitetsu station was rebuilt and renamed Nishitetsu Chihaya on 2 August 2004 once the elevation work was complete. The JR station has two island platforms with a Midori-no-Madoguchi office; Nishitetsu has a single elevated island platform numbered NK03. Both buildings share a connected concourse. In fiscal 2024 JR Chihaya averaged 14,264 boarders per day.

Nishitetsu had scheduled its renaming and relocation for 1 August 2004, but the operation was postponed by a day after an approaching typhoon.
