Bandōbashi Station opened on 16 December 1972 with the inauguration of the first segment of the Yokohama Municipal Subway (today's Blue Line). The station sits on land reclaimed by filling in the former Shin-Yoshida River and takes its name from the Hansand bridge that once crossed the river there, a name retained from the Yokohama City Tram stop that operated nearby until 1972. Platform-edge doors entered service on 9 June 2007. The 500-metre gap between Bandōbashi and Yoshinochō is the shortest inter-station distance on the Blue Line. The station carries number B15 and is officially located in Yayoi-chō, Naka-ku, Yokohama, with parts of the platforms and two exits (exits 1 and 4) crossing into the Takane-chō district of Minami-ku.

The 500-metre run from Bandōbashi to Yoshinochō is the shortest inter-station gap on the Yokohama Municipal Subway Blue Line.
