Awai Station opened on 3 April 1927 as an intermediate stop when Japanese Government Railways' then Sanyo Line was extended from Iyo-Hōjō to Matsuyama. It was operated by JGR and then by Japanese National Railways until JNR's 1 April 1987 privatisation, when control passed to JR Shikoku. The unstaffed station consists of two opposed side platforms connected by a footbridge, with a modern brick waiting building that also houses an automatic ticket vending machine. It sits 180.3 km from the start of the Yosan Line at Takamatsu and carries the station number Y50, served only by Yosan Line locals running between Iyo-Saijō and Matsuyama.
