Arashima Station opened on 8 November 1908 when the state-built line through Yasugi was extended west to Matsue, in present-day Yasugi, Shimane Prefecture. From 14 July 1928 it served as the junction with the Hirose Railway Line to Izumo-Hirose, an interchange that successively passed through Sanin Central Railway (1944), independent Shimane Railway (1948) and Ichibata Electric Railway (1954) before the Hirose Line closed on 20 June 1960. The station joined JR West at the JNR breakup on 1 April 1987 and became unstaffed on 16 March 1991. ICOCA was introduced via simple readers on 17 December 2016. The site retains its wooden station building and a compound 2-island/3-track platform layout permitting train meets and passing.

The wooden station building still hosts a one-room "Arashima Station Friendship Hall" exhibit, and the old waiting room is shared with an attached bicycle-storage office whose attendant does not sell tickets.
