Annaka-Haruna Station opened on 1 October 1997 with the Takasaki-to-Nagano section of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, operated by JR East. The site was not in the railway corporation's original 1982 plan, and was added only after sustained lobbying by Gunma Prefecture; the construction plan was formally amended on 29 August 1986. The elevated station has two side platforms and a staffed Midori-no-Madoguchi ticket office, and serves a small number of Asama services and one evening Hakutaka. In fiscal 2024 average daily boardings stood at 269, well below pre-opening projections of around 1,500.

Because the surrounding area was carved out of forested hills with no nearby settlement, contemporary media nicknamed the station "Mononoke Station" after Studio Ghibli's 1997 film Princess Mononoke.
