Akase opened on 5 August 1907 as the seasonal Akase Temporary Stop, established by the Japanese Government Railway to serve nearby beachgoers. It became a year-round provisional stop on 16 October 1909 and was promoted to a full station on 1 January 1941. Parcel handling began on 1 May 1953, and on 1 April 1962 the station was placed under contract operation by Nippon Kotsu Kanko-sha. Parcel handling was abolished on 20 September 1973, and the station became unstaffed at the same time. With the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways, the station passed to JR Kyushu, which still operates it as part of the Misumi (Amakusa-Misumi) Line.

Akase appeared on the spring 1998 Seishun 18 Kippu poster, helping cement its reputation as a "secluded station" tucked into the hills above the coast.
